Preparing for USMLE Step 1 can feel overwhelming with the sheer number of resources
available. One of the biggest mistakes I made early on was trying to use everything.
Over time, I realized that consistency with a few high-quality resources is far more effective than constantly switching between them.
Here are the Step 1 Resources That Actually Worked for me —

Video Resources
1. Boards & Beyond (BnB)
My go-to resource for building a strong foundation. If you're starting a new system or struggling with the basics, BnB explains concepts in a structured, high-yield way.
2. Bootcamp (bootcamp.com)
Excellent for learning concepts one short video at a time. The videos are concise, easy to follow, and perfect when you want to make steady daily progress without feeling overwhelmed.
3. Dirty Medicine
One of the best resources for memorization. Dirty Medicine teaches difficult topics through creative mnemonics and memorable explanations that tend to stick long after you've watched the videos. Best known for his biochemistry series.
4. Ninja Nerd
Perfect for topics that require a deeper understanding. Whenever I encountered a concept that just wasn't clicking, Ninja Nerd's detailed explanations helped me connect the dots.
5. Medicosis Perfectionalis
Learning medicine becomes surprisingly enjoyable with Medicosis. His entertaining teaching style makes complex concepts much easier to remember. Their Hematology series, in particular, is outstanding.
Question Banks
6. UWorld (A Must!)
If I had to recommend just one resource, it would be UWorld.
Don't just answer the questions; study the explanations thoroughly. Every question is a learning opportunity, and the educational value comes from understanding why each answer choice is right or wrong.
7. Mehlman Videos
A fantastic passive learning resource. I often listened to these while walking or doing
household chores. Reviewing one question and its underlying concept at a time helped
reinforce high-yield information without needing dedicated study time.
Other Resources
8. Anki Flashcards
Anki was one of the most valuable tools in my preparation.
You can use one of the popular pre-made decks or create your own. I personally made my own cards because the process itself helped me learn, and reviewing them every single day kept important concepts fresh in my memory.
Consistency with Anki made a huge difference over time.
9. Mehlman PDFs
These are excellent for focused, high-yield revision closer to the exam.
The PDFs I found especially helpful were:
Microbiology
Neuroanatomy
Arrows
Ethics
Biochemistry
Genetics
A Final Word
The USMLE journey is a marathon, not a sprint.
There will be days when you'll question yourself, feel exhausted, or even cry because nothing seems to stick. That's completely normal. Every person preparing for this exam experiences moments of self-doubt.
The key isn't being perfect; it's showing up again the next day.
Stay consistent. Trust the process. Celebrate small wins. And remember that every question you solve and every page you revise brings you one step closer to your goal.
Keep going, you've got this!

Thank you for taking the time to put this together. I'm sure it will help many aspirants
